Braintrust

52 active listings

Braintrust is a freelance talent marketplace where companies post contract work and freelancers apply directly through the platform. Alongside ordinary freelance roles it carries AI-training projects from several data and model companies, and those are the listings shown here: Outlier's expert and generalist AI-trainer roles, DataMundi's country-specific data-collection projects, coding annotation, legal review and STEM research-evaluation work for a frontier AI lab, and Braintrust's own transcription projects. Most roles are remote but restricted to named countries, and pay is quoted per listing — hourly for the expert work, a flat fee for short data-collection tasks. You apply with a Braintrust profile, and work is contracted and paid through the platform.

Real marketplace, very poor Trustpilot

Mostly. Braintrust is a real, well-funded freelance marketplace, but its Trustpilot page is almost entirely one-star, and pay is by invoice up to 30 days after submission.

Who is behind it

Braintrust is a freelance talent marketplace, not a single employer: clients (including AI-data companies) post contract work and freelancers apply. The Block reported a $100 million private token sale in December 2021 led by Coatue, with Tiger Global, True Ventures, HashKey and Blockchain Ventures also taking part; this was a sale of its BTRST token, not an equity round. A third-party profile names Adam Jackson and Gabriel Luna-Ostaseski as founders (2018); we could not confirm that against a primary source.

Getting paid

Braintrust's help center says talent are paid 30 days after each invoice is submitted, or sooner if the client pays first, and that payments should stay on the platform. Bank details are collected through Wise, with Payoneer suggested as a workaround where a country is not listed; we could only read these from search results, so check the current help pages.

Worker ratings

  • Trustpilot: 1.7 / 5

20 reviews: 0% five-star, 95% one-star (19 of 20), 5% two-star. The page says 5 reviews in the last 12 months, but the listed dates suggest more than that, and the star graphic shows 1.5 while the text says 1.7. The profile is unclaimed and no company replies are shown. A search snippet listed 18 reviews, so the count has moved.

What people complain about

  • Reviewers report being required to do a video or AI screening before applications reach employers, and some say they were rejected without explanation.
  • Several reviewers report a flood of unsolicited emails and WhatsApp messages after signing up.
  • Reviewers report slow support, a site that fails to load, difficulty deleting an account, and roles that differed from what was advertised.

Who it suits

Best for: Experienced freelancers who can wait up to 30 days for an invoice and want to apply to client roles, through one profile.

Not for: Anyone who needs fast or guaranteed pay, or who is uncomfortable with an upfront video screening and heavy follow-up contact.
