# **Domain Expert – Legal (Lexis+ Research)** **To qualify you must use Lexis+ regularly - weekly or more - as a working part of your job, with 2+ years of professional legal experience.** ### Lexis+ knowledge we require **Citators / good law** - Shepard's Citations Service: Shepard's Signal indicators (red stop sign, orange "Q" questioned, yellow caution, green positive treatment, blue "I" citing references), Depth of Discussion indicators, citing references, overruling risk _(Westlaw: KeyCite)_ - Distinguishing overruled, superseded, depublished, and distinguished-on-facts authority **Searching & finding** - Terms-and-connectors (Boolean) vs. natural-language search; segment searching - Lexis Headnotes, Case Summaries, and Case Notes (annotated statute equivalent to Notes of Decisions) - Lexis+ with Protégé - litigation issue filters, Shepard's Graphical (visual case history) - Protégé natural-language / AI-assisted search **Secondary sources** - Treatises (Matthew Bender), ALR, Am. Jur., practice guides, Practical Guidance (Lexis Practice Advisor), 50-state surveys **Statutes & regulations** - Annotated statutes/regs; version comparison; historical and effective-date versions; currentness - The version of the law in force on a given operative date **Analytics & records** - Litigation Analytics (Lex Machina); Brief Analysis; dockets / CourtLink / PACER ### What you'll do - Confirm every case, statute, and regulation is still good law for the point cited; catch negative Shepard's treatment - Catch non-existent or misdescribed cases; verify quotes, holdings, and pin cites - Judge completeness: is controlling authority found; are on-point cases missed; are 50-state / multi-jurisdiction splits kept distinct - Verify currency: the version of the law in force on the operative date - Distinguish binding vs. persuasive authority; require verify-before-finalize ### Requirements - **Frequent Lexis+ use - weekly or more - for substantive legal research in your current or recent role** - **2+ years of professional legal-research experience** - Reflexive Shepard's / KeyCite use; can spot a bad cite, misstated holding, or superseded statute on sight - J.D. and bar admission, MLIS / law librarian, or equivalent research-heavy experience
