Terac is one of the newer names in this space and one of the more interesting, because it sits across two markets at once: traditional paid research studies — interviews, surveys, usability tests for real companies — and AI-training projects for frontier labs.
That breadth is unusual. The same account might show you a 20-minute usability test and a sustained engagement building reinforcement-learning environments or authoring coding benchmarks for AI agents.
There is also one specific thing about Terac's interface that misleads people about pay, covered below. It is the most useful part of this review.
What Terac is
Founded in 2025 in San Francisco by Zachary Baker and Jack Blair, backed by $9M in seed funding from Antigravity Capital. It connects a network of roughly 100,000 vetted participants with market-research companies and AI labs needing human evaluation and training data.
Vetting is real: ID verification and work-email matching are used to keep the panel genuine. That matters more than it sounds — a research panel's entire value to clients is that the “senior radiologist” answering is actually a senior radiologist, so the friction at signup is the product working.
The “Earn $15.00/hr” label is not the pay
This is the thing to know, and almost nothing written about Terac mentions it.
Terac runs a referral programme paying a share of what a referred participant earns. In the logged-in referrals view, that commission is displayed under an “Earn $X” label — and it is easy to read as the study's pay rate. It is not.
A concrete example we verified: the SWE Coding Benchmarks study displays “Earn $15.00/hr” in that view. Actual participant pay on that study is $45–$75/hr. The $15 is the referrer's commission, not what you would be paid.
If you arrived at Terac through someone's referral link and concluded the rates were mediocre, check the study's own page. The real number is frequently three to five times the figure that caught your eye. Read the pay on the opportunity listing itself, never from a referral dashboard.
What it actually pays
Rates vary by format, which is why published figures differ so much:
- Typical range — $24–$40/hr across the general catalog.
- Technical AI-training projects — commonly $45–$75/hr for work like RL environment building and coding benchmarks.
- Senior and specialist engagements — $50–$150/hr, reaching $200/hr for specialist finance and accounting work.
- Single sessions — interviews and studies commonly post flat fees of $100–$350.
Note the two payment shapes. Technical projects are hourly; interviews and surveys are flat per-task fees. Eligibility: check every listing
Most listings are remote, but many are country-restricted, and the restriction is set per study by the client rather than platform-wide. There is no single answer to “does Terac accept my country” — it depends on the study.

About that 5.0 rating
Terac currently shows a 5.0 on both Trustpilot and Google, which is genuinely rare in this industry — most platforms here sit between 2 and 3.5.
Read it as a strong early signal rather than proof. A perfect score on a platform founded in 2025 reflects a small review sample, not years of stress-testing at scale. The failure modes in this industry — payment delays, mass deactivations, projects vanishing — tend to surface under growth pressure that a young platform has not met yet. Encouraging, not conclusive.
Honest drawbacks
- Short track record. Founded 2025. It has not been through a funding crunch or a client loss yet.
- Per-study eligibility makes availability unpredictable if you are outside the main markets.
- Vetting friction. ID verification and work-email matching mean you cannot start anonymously.
- Study-based work is inherently lumpy. Like Prolific, you take what is posted — though Terac's rates are several times higher.
Who it suits
Strong fit: credentialed professionals — especially in finance, accounting, software engineering and the sciences — who can verify their expertise with a work email and want high-value one-off engagements rather than a steady grind.

Bottom line
Terac is a credible, well-funded young platform paying above the market average, with an unusually clean early reputation. The catalog spans quick paid studies through to $200/hr specialist engagements, and the flat-fee interviews are often the best effective rate on the board.
Just read pay from the study page, not from a referral link's “Earn $X” label — they are different numbers, and the difference is usually in your favour.
