On November 2, 2026 our feed held three live listings that need Swahili, from two platforms: Meridial and Welo Data. That is a small pool, and only one of the three states a rate. This guide covers what each says, where you must be, and the other work that names Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Every number comes from the listings.
The three Swahili listings
Meridial: Swahili Language Specialist
It is open worldwide and states a pay range of $6 to $65 an hour, with the exact rate determined after evaluating your experience, expertise and geographic location. The work is conversing with a language model about Swahili grammar, noun classes, verb conjugation, idiomatic expressions, tone and pronunciation, and documenting where it fails. The text says a master's or PhD in Swahili, linguistics or a related field is ideal, and that publications, translation experience or linguistic analysis projects signal fit.
Welo Data: AI Trainers Network, Swahili
This one is a talent community, not a job. The text says it is not an active job opening: you join the contributor network, and when a project fits your skills Welo Data sends the scope, timeline and compensation. It asks for native or near-native Swahili, English proficiency, and that you are based in Kenya, Tanzania or the Democratic Republic of Congo. No pay is stated.
Welo Data: Swahili Linguistic Evaluator and Functional Tester
This is an on-site role, listed in Tokyo, Japan. It combines evaluating a pre-release AI model in Swahili with testing how it performs on a client-supplied smartphone and a smart glass device. No pay is stated, and the listing text in our feed stops at the responsibilities. Unless you are in Tokyo, it is not open to you.
A listing to skip
Welo Data also has Punjabi, Gujarati and Malayalam evaluator listings in Barcelona whose text describes a native-level Swahili speaker, the same text as the Tokyo listing. Their titles name other languages, so this looks like copied text. We tag one of them as Swahili because of the text, but we would not treat any of the three as Swahili work without checking with Welo Data first.
What is open to people in East Africa
Few listings name an East African country. Kenya has two (the Welo Data network above, and a Meridial Online Ordering Specialist at a stated $5 an hour). Tanzania has two from Meridial: a Luo Language Specialist at $8 to $65 an hour and a Garment Manufacturing QC Specialist at $6 to $15. Uganda has two from Meridial: a Kinyarwanda Language Specialist at $6 to $65 and a Ganda Language Specialist at $8 to $65. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has one pay-by-task listing from Crowdgen whose feed shows a value of $0.01, which we would not read as a rate.
Beyond those, more than 2,000 listings in our feed state no country restriction, and they are open to someone in Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda as well, though most are in English. You can browse them on our browse page.
What the listings state
| Platform | Listing | What it states | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meridial | Swahili Language Specialist | $6 to $65/hr | Worldwide |
| Welo Data | AI Trainers Network, Swahili | No pay stated | Kenya, Tanzania or DRC |
| Welo Data | Swahili Linguistic Evaluator and Functional Tester | No pay stated | On-site, Tokyo |
The catches
- The pool is small. Three listings from two platforms is not a steady supply, so expect to look at roles beyond Swahili.
- Meridial's $65 is a ceiling. The range starts at $6, and your location is one of the factors that sets the rate.
- A talent community is not an opening. Welo Data's network says it will contact you when a project fits, and the pay is shared then.
- One role is on-site. The evaluator job is in Tokyo and involves testing on a device, so it is not remote.
- The text can be wrong. The Swahili wording appears on three listings that are titled for other languages.
Common questions
Do I need to live in Kenya or Tanzania?
Only for Welo Data's network, which asks for Kenya, Tanzania or the Democratic Republic of Congo. Meridial's Swahili role is open worldwide.
Do I need a degree?
Meridial says a master's or PhD in Swahili, linguistics or a related field is ideal, not required, and that publications or translation experience also signal fit. Welo Data asks for native or near-native fluency and English proficiency.
